Love is in the air.. Couples are preparing to celebrate their love for each other, thinking of ways to please and surprise their partners. Valentine’s Day is one of the romantic days of the year. But have you ever wondered how this celebration came about? Well, there are many versions of the legend of St. Valentine. Let us tell you about the ones that we heard about. One legend claims that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. Back then, Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men as he believed that single men made better soldiers than married men. Realizing how ridiculous it was to put a stop to love, Valentine ignored Claudius and performed secret marriages for young lovers. However Claudius discovered Valentine’s act of defiance and punished him with the death sentence. What an admirable man, he stood up against the oppression and stuck to his principles fully knowing the consequences of his actions.

Nonetheless, there are others who insist that the Christian church placed St. Valentine’s feast day in same month of the pagan celebration of Lupercalia in order to spread its Christian influences. Lupercalia is a fertility festival dedicated to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus and also Faunus, who is the Roman god of agriculture. During the festival, priests would sacrifice a goat for fertility and a dog for purification. The goat’s hide would then be cut into strips and dipped into sacrificial blood. They are used to gently slapped women and crop fields to make them more fertile. Later in the day too, young women would place their names in a big urn in hopes of finding potential husbands. Much like lucky draws, bachelors would randomly pick a name and become paired with the chosen woman for a year. If this practice continued to our times, it would be a totally bizarre and terrifying ritual to perform. Imagine having to rely on lucky draws to find the right partner for yourself, many things would have gone wrong.

Luckily in the twenty-first century, we get to decide whom we choose to shower our love on. Be it publicly or privately, we display affection for our partners by buying gifts and bringing them out on cheesy dates. In Kuching, you know it’s that time of year again when roadside stalls selling teddy bears, chocolates and bouquet of flowers start popping up.
